menu on the side instead of a slim bar on top

on a 1080p display, the tabs on the top navigation bar don't all fit on the screen, requiring you to scroll back and forth. but there's so much free real estate on the sides of the screen, why not put a menu box on there instead? the site could always fall back to the current top navbar if the screen is narrower.
